Our concern can be organized into three overarching categories: Design, Safety and Environmental
In 2009, the City published a Design Guideline for the development of NE 18th Street, which effectively results in widening of the street. This plan can be found in the resources section of this site and also on the City's website. Our goal is to lend voice to the project design to ensure that neighbor concerns related to safety and the environment (including noise pollution) are addressed.
The Bonneville Power Administration does in fact own the property immediately south of NE 18th Street, in fact much of that land is leased to the property owners adjacent to the land. We are working with the City to understand the impact to those leases, the BPA land and will update the site with information as it is forthcoming.
We are working with the City to address this important concern. We believe that all children and pedestrians should have a safe journey to and from their destinations, especially schools.
The current design guidelines, which were drafted in 2009, call for the trees to remain, placed in a 50 foot median in the roadway. We are working with the City to understand if this is possible and whether the road construction would have any impact on the survivability of those trees.
